The three prices

Every item in a store has three prices, and the store only shows you the first one. This is the whole spine of the book.

What the receipt says

  • Case of bottled water, 24about $14 a month
  • Coffee pods, three a dayabout $40 a month
  • Broth cartons, two a weekabout $20 a month
  • Pre-cut fruit cupabout $3 a cup
  • Bagged saladabout $2 a salad
Every month, foreverand it never stops

What the house uses instead

  • The tap and a pitcher, or the garrafón refill$1 to $2 for five gallons
  • The big can, or Great Value 12 oz at $6.28a few cents a cup
  • The bones of the $8.50 chickennearly free
  • Bananas at 54 cents a poundunder $1 a pound
  • Cabbage, 78 cents a pound, keeps three weeksnine salads a head
The same fooda fraction of it

Those are real prices off a real shelf tag, the week I wrote the chapter. Your store will differ and prices drift, which is why the book teaches you to read the tag instead of trusting my number.

WHAT READERS WRITE ME
★★★★★

"I have been watching your videos and love them! I just had to get your cook book too. Your recipes are great for someone like me, retired, on a fixed income looking for cheaper ways to cook and not starve. Thank you for sharing your cooking knowledge."

★★★★★

"I try her remedies and am satisfied that they work, and then I give the store bought product away. I am saving money by not buying paper towels or other disposable products. These changes in my life have more than paid for the book over and over again."

G. · verified buyer · on Bertha's Cleaning Book
★★★★★

"I started reading this right away, and I can't put it down! I have been cooking for 50 years and I have already learned a ton in the first 4 chapters. Your book has already paid for itself and I haven't reached the recipes yet. Amazing job!"

Joel · verified buyer · on Bertha's Cookbook
★★★★★

"There are SO many easy and very cheap hacks around the house that work fabulously. I purchased 3 of your books so I can flip thru and remember or look up specific hacks for different days! I shared them as gifts with my niece and best friend as well. It saves so much time and strength that I don't have anymore, which is a life saver. Also, it keeps pets and children safe from dangerous chemicals! Absolutely the most useful book I have ever purchased, besides my Bible."

Janice, GA · verified buyer · on Bertha's Cleaning Book
★★★★★

"Her rice and beans and albondigas rocked my world and changed my kitchen. I love how practical and affordable and delicious her cooking is. When I shop for the ingredients she teaches me, they always talk to me in Spanish at the store."

Zefire, WA · verified buyer · on Bertha's Cookbook
★★★★★

"These books are what our mothers should have taught us, if someone had taught them. Simple strategies that are nontoxic and affordable. Schools should use all of her books for home economics classes that everyone takes."

Bertha Ramírez in my kitchen

Bertha Ramírez

My mother fed seven people on one wage, and she did it with a list folded in her apron pocket. She walked to the store on the first of the month and nobody in that house ever went hungry or cold. I watched her do the arithmetic in her head at the shelf, and it took me twenty years to understand she was reading three prices while everyone else read one.

I will not tell you to panic, and I will not tell you to buy before the shelves empty. That is a trick the channels use and we do not. I will tell you what a thing really costs by the time it reaches the table.

Questions, answered honestly

Are these prices going to be right at my store?
No, and I say so inside the book on the first page. Every price in here came off a real shelf tag at Walmart the week I wrote that chapter. Prices drift and your store differs. That is exactly why the book teaches the unit price and the price per supper: so you can do the arithmetic yourself at the shelf and never need my number again.
Is a paper book coming in the mail?
Not for this one yet, mija, and I would rather say it plainly than surprise you. This is a digital book, a PDF. Nothing ships. My other books are available printed, and if you want this one on paper too, write to me and tell me so, because that is how I decide what to do next.
I am not good with computers.
You do not need to be. You press one button and the book opens like a photograph opens. No account, no password. If it does not open, write to me and I will walk you through it myself, or give you your money back.
Is this a subscription?
No. One payment, one time. No membership, no monthly anything, no free trial that turns into a bill.
Is this just coupon tips I could find free online?
No, and there is not a coupon in it. Coupons are the store choosing which thing you overpay for. This is the arithmetic underneath: what a pound of protein actually costs, what a supper actually costs, and which of the six stores wins on which item. And you cannot stand in an aisle holding a video.
Do I need a Costco membership, or a Mexican market near me?
No. The warehouse chapter does the membership arithmetic honestly, including the case where it does not pay for you. Most of the book is Walmart and Dollar Tree, which nearly everyone can reach.
Is it in Spanish or English?
English, warm and plain, with the little Spanish words a mother would use. Anyone can follow it.
